I spoke with Gamblin Colors regarding this question, and this was her answer:

According to Gamblin Colors: Adhering Pre-primed linen (or canvas) to board (this also works with Arches Oil Paper).

Use a neutral pH glue such as Lineco PVA adhesive glue.

  • Cut fabric slightly larger than your board
  • Use a 4” paint roller or brush to apply 2 coats of glue (let the first one dry for a few minutes til tacky, then apply the second coat)
  • Lie fabric (or Arches paper) down and very gently use your hand (or brayer) from the center out to prevent air pockets. (*Be sure to cover the surface of your painting with a a sheet of protective paper – brayer on top of the protective paper)
  • Lie the board flat, and for a tight bond, lay a board on top with some weights. Wait a day or so for this to dry
  • This is an irreversible process.

Pam's Notes:

1) I have found it best to put a thin layer of Lineco Adhesive on to the wooden panel first, let dry until tacky, and then add more Lineco adhesive

2) While wet, lay the painting down on the panel and proceed as above with a brayer over the protective paper on top of the painting.

3) Weigh down as above

4) Trim edges with a sharp blade once the painting is securely dried to the wooden support.

5) Do not put any liquid adhesive on the backside of the painting if on Arches oil paper since the paper will expand.

6) Mount works on paper on to wooden supports slightly smaller so you can trim the excess edges for a clean and professional look.
