Encaustic medium ratios can vary from artist to artist, but I use the ratio recommended in Joanne Mattera's book (The Art of Encaustic Painting), which is 8 parts of beeswax to 1 part of damar. Note: Damar Resin is NOT the same as Damar Varnish! You can use a unit of measure (ie, en empty pet food can that is 4 oz, or 6oz, or 8 oz (best not to go any higher than 12 oz or you will possibly overflow in your electric frying pan!). You can also measure by weight if you like; this is most likely the most accurate way to measure, but I was taught using the empty pet food can and it is close enough to the 8:1 ratio since you can use other ratios.

For example, you may want to increase the amount of damar resin to 2 parts to 8 parts beeswax. This w ould increase the shine and add strength - but keep in mind that the higher the damar resin content, the more possible it is for the surface to chip or be a bit brittle.
