Although I apply 2 initial layers of plain beeswax when prepping a board for encaustic painting, I state this is “optional” and this is how I was originally taught. However, you can absolutely use just encaustic medium in your initial layers. Just 1 layer of encaustic medium is fine; I use 2 -3 only to build enough depth if I wish to use texture tools.
