I would say that you should develop the mindset of “PLAY”. Imagine you are a 3-year-old using these encaustic paints (um, except that you are an adult, using a torch or heat gun!). Have a playful, experimental approach asking yourself “What if…”, and just do it. As long as you fuse between layers, I would experiment with opacity, transparency, mark making materials and texturing the surface – just be an observers of what happens without attempting to create a masterpiece! Give yourself plenty of time to just experiment and learn what this medium has to teach you!
