I talk about a heavy duty plastic sheet I often put on my 6 ft table tops to protect the tables - they are called high density polyethylene (HDPE) and I often like the 1/4-3/8in thickness so I can use them beneath my encaustic heated appliances - they are easy to scrape wax off of. Call your local plastics company and measure your table - they will cut to size - and ask for 1/4-3/8in thickness. They are quite expensive but they last a long time!
